The universe is not a lawless vacuum; it is a moral realm governed by a Holy Judge whose character is the ultimate standard of law. The “Good News” of the Gospel is only intelligible against the backdrop of the “Bad News”—the legal catastrophe of the Fall. Salvation is not a sentimental gesture of a permissive deity; it is a complex legal necessity required by the immutable character of God. We begin our study by looking not at the cross, but at the bench, understanding that the holiness of God and the rebellion of man have created a judicial deadlock that only a divine intervention could resolve.
